This Sunday night appeared to be the NFL’s response to Polamalu, Ward, and Harrison’s comments questioning not only NFL policy but the integrity of the NFL dictatorship decision makers. If you were not convinced by the disproportionate fines and flags for the style of play, then after last night there is no question that the NFL is sending a message to the Steelers to shut up.
Before I go any further I do not live in Pittsburgh and I am not a Steelers fan, but Pittsburgh took the NFL’s best punch last night. What the NFL didn’t count on is that Pittsburgh is one of the few teams that take on the persona of their town and fans. Pittsburgh basically took a stand and said you can literally punch us in the face and we will get up every time and come right back at you whether you are the Baltimore Ravens or the NFL itself.
There might have been some questionable hits on quarterbacks this year that drew some questionable flags and fines from the NFL but the no calls during the Sunday night game was equivalent to the NFL giving the Steelers a public flogging. A clear message was sent do not talk publically about the NFL. There was a game this year where I saw a quarterback get touched in the helmet by literally a pinky and a flag was thrown. Ben Roethlisberger last night walked off the field early in the first quarter after receiving a shot to the face, courtesy of Baltimore’s defensive tackle Haloti Ngata, with a nose that would make UFC Fighter Randy Couture flinch (Google some shots of his nose)
Another shocking no call was the most violent hit I have seen this season that came when Baltimore’s corner Chris Carr hit Heath Miller, the Pittsburgh Steelers tight end. You know it’s bad when the defense is waiving you in reminding you of the infamous Lawrence Taylor and Joe Theismann broken leg play. But visually for the viewing audience you know it is serious when you see the uncontrollable freaky arm rise. Almost like the individual has partly crossed over and St. Peter is asking ‘ok everyone that is here because of a vicious football hit, raise your hand”.
Clearly Chris Collinsworth did not get the memo from the NFL. On several occasions last night he seemed dumbfounded by the no calls against Baltimore and the some sketchy calls against Pittsburgh. It’s rare that I say that I loved watching a 13-10 game but last night was like watching a sports movie about a team that have overcome insane odds to prevail, all of that added with the importance of the game it was great. The one thing that the NFL has is some of the best drama in sports. By the way the lead story on NFL.com when I wrote this was “Roethlisberger bloodied”.
