Where's Our Seabiscuit?

With movies like Seabiscuit and Cinderella Man that were released a few years ago that center on the uplifting redemption theme during the Great Depression got me thinking, where is our Seabiscuit?  Are we living in times that were as bad as the Great Depression?  Probably not, at least not yet.  However, no one could argue that there are scared, anxious, and confused feelings out there.  My question to you is where is our sports figure that we can rally behind that gives us hope, which defines us through these desperate times?

I do not see one.  I would not having a problem stating that most of our athletes I won’t say is overpaid because you are paid what they market allows, but to have to watch these arrogant athletes complaints is absolutely insulting with what is going on with the economy.  What we do have is a lineman that is making one hundred million dollars and not giving one hundred percent every day because he doesn’t want to be in a 3-4 defense.  What we do have is an incredibly compensated basketball player that has won no championships taking his talents to South beach and doing Nike commercial (endorsement contract close to one hundred million) pleading to us ‘what should I do?’, ‘am I a villain?’, and the answer is we don’t care about your hurt feelings just play.  And the countless others of dui

Point me too the athlete today that we will look at with reverence and inspiration the same way that we can look at the Cinderella Man, the film about boxer Jim Braddack.  Tell me the scene that we can point to in the sports world that is comparable to the scene when Jim Braddack repaid the welfare money that he was forced to get to keep his kids in his house.

I think the closest we have may be Zenyatta or Barrack Obama but even lately they are not the most inspiring figures.  Zenyatta the amazing mare that is famous for running so far in the back of the field that there is no way that she would have a chance.  Until her last race she was always able to defy the field when some have given up on her.  Our president is a basketball fanatic so this is a stretch trying to squeeze him in here, but with the inspirational presidential race focusing on change and with the added appeal of our country electing the first black president you can see the possibility there.  However, we quickly learned that it is hard to change Washington regardless of your color.

We need this athlete, we need the inspirational story, but it starting the current situation is starting to take on that old adage ‘they don’t make them like they used to.’  But it always seems like when all hope is lost that hero will reveal themselves.  Please hurry.

The NFL Hates the Pittsburgh Steelers

This Sunday night appeared to be the NFL’s response to Polamalu, Ward, and Harrison’s comments questioning not only NFL policy but the integrity of the NFL dictatorship decision makers.  If you were not convinced by the disproportionate fines and flags for the style of play, then after last night there is no question that the NFL is sending a message to the Steelers to shut up.

Before I go any further I do not live in Pittsburgh and I am not a Steelers fan, but Pittsburgh took the NFL’s best punch last night.  What the NFL didn’t count on is that Pittsburgh is one of the few teams that take on the persona of their town and fans.  Pittsburgh basically took a stand and said you can literally punch us in the face and we will get up every time and come right back at you whether you are the Baltimore Ravens or the NFL itself.

There might have been some questionable hits on quarterbacks this year that drew some questionable flags and fines from the NFL but the no calls during the Sunday night game was equivalent to the NFL giving the Steelers a public flogging.  A clear message was sent do not talk publically about the NFL.  There was a game this year where I saw a quarterback get touched in the helmet by literally a pinky and a flag was thrown.  Ben Roethlisberger last night walked off the field early in the first quarter after receiving a shot to the face, courtesy of Baltimore’s defensive tackle Haloti Ngata, with a nose that would make UFC Fighter Randy Couture flinch (Google some shots of his nose)

Another shocking no call was the most violent hit I have seen this season that came when Baltimore’s corner Chris Carr hit Heath Miller, the Pittsburgh Steelers tight end.  You know it’s bad when the defense is waiving you in reminding you of the infamous Lawrence Taylor and Joe Theismann broken leg play.  But visually for the viewing audience you know it is serious when you see the uncontrollable freaky arm rise.  Almost like the individual has partly crossed over and St. Peter is asking ‘ok everyone that is here because of a vicious football hit, raise your hand”.

Clearly Chris Collinsworth did not get the memo from the NFL.  On several occasions last night he seemed dumbfounded by the no calls against Baltimore and the some sketchy calls against Pittsburgh.  It’s rare that I say that I loved watching a 13-10 game but last night was like watching a sports movie about a team that have overcome insane odds to prevail, all of that added with the importance of the game it was great.  The one thing that the NFL has is some of the best drama in sports.  By the way the lead story on NFL.com when I wrote this was “Roethlisberger bloodied”.

How Dare You NFL? How Dare You?

The witty Don Drapers are now writing the NFL 'It's Almost Monday Night' commercials that promise a salvation to the most horrible work day of the week. However, just as Wrangler decided to pull their Brett Favre advertisement the same time there were reports that he was texting his little jet, the NFL should pull their clever Monday Night commercials when they are putting an inferior product on television. I am of course speaking of the total debacle of a so called NFL football game where the Arizona Cardinals were embarrassed by the San Francisco 49ers. In actuality the Arizona Cardinals just embarrassed themselves. I am growing more and more less interested in the NFL this year than I have ever been before in the past. Don’t get me wrong I love football and it will forever be my sport of choice but whereas in the past I could watch almost any game regardless if it was my favorite team or even if it had no fantasy football relevance to me. There seems to be more and more teams this year than appear to be indifferent to whether they win or lose or whether they are putting a product that justifies the income that this sport produces. The incentives in contracts should stay if a player plays well and a transition from salary to commission based pay when the player just shows no sign of inspired play. Talk about needing to protect the shield.

This uninspired play can be linked to the question of how to solve the debate of the eighteen game schedule. It’s time to get rid of some of these franchises. There are clearly too many players in the NFL. When you don’t play every game with the passion of the Tom Brady’s, Ray Lewis’, troy polamalu’s, Heinz Ward’s, and a handful of others then being an NFL player has lost some of its shine. Break some of these franchises up and stop creating millionaires that have lost their passion as each square foot of their houses increase.
